Today, we’re walking you through an ideal scenario: stripping an oil-based stain off a deck that's around five years old. Whether it's your own deck or a client's, this guide will show you the steps you need to follow for a successful restoration.
Initial Inspection
Before jumping into any project, the most important step is to take a quick assessment of the deck. The deck in this example had an oil-based penetrating stain applied about two and a half years ago. The stain was clearly starting to fail—with barely any color left and the protective sealing completely gone.
Prepping your deck is crucial. If screws or nails are sticking out, you’ll want to address these issues before starting. In this case, the homeowner had already gone through and set all the screws, leaving the surface ready for us to start stripping.
Tools and Materials
Stripping a deck may seem like a big job, but if you have the right tools in your arsenal, it’s easier than you might think. Here’s what we used for this particular job:
- Power washer for pre-wetting and rinsing
- Pump-up sprayer for applying wood cleaner
- Wood cleaner mixed at 8 ounces per gallon
- Brightener for after cleaning
We used a Scotch sprayer, which we love because they offer different spray patterns and are durable enough to keep coming back to job after job.
Prepping the Deck
Prepping involves pre-wetting the deck with a fine mist before applying any cleaner. This step ensures that the cleaner spreads evenly and doesn’t soak too deeply into dry wood. Using the power washer on a light setting, we misted down the whole deck to get it nice and damp.
Once the deck was damp, we applied the wood cleaner using the pump-up sprayer, aiming for a coverage rate around 100 to 200 square feet per gallon. Remember to keep the surface wet throughout this process—it helps the cleaner work better and ensures an even strip.
Light Stripping Process
The cleaner needs time to do its thing. We typically let it sit anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes depending on the condition of the deck and the weather on the day of application.
Once the cleaner had done its work, we rinsed off the deck. It’s important to rinse along the full length of each board. A light hand here is key—you don’t want to force the cleaner in too much or strip the wood itself.
In this case, we managed to get most of the old stain off. Some stubborn spots were left behind, but that’s not a problem. These areas will be addressed later with sanding.
One thing you’ll notice during this process is that the deck might start to look darker after the initial cleaning. That’s due to the tannins being brought to the surface by the wood cleaner.
Applying Brightener
Now that the cleaning was done, it was time to neutralize the wood and bring back its natural color using a wood brightener. This step cannot be skipped, as it not only neutralizes any leftover cleaner but also opens the wood grain for better absorption of the new stain.
The brightener is mixed at one cup per gallon, applied evenly across the deck. You’ll see an immediate difference as you go. You’ll know exactly where you’ve already applied the brightener, making the process simple and straightforward.
Final Rinse
Once the brightener has had its time to settle, we followed that up with a final rinse. We rinsed the deck, the surrounding house, the nearby pool, any furniture, and all the foliage to ensure any leftover cleaner or brightener didn't damage the area.
After rinsing, the deck was noticeably brighter and, most importantly, it was ready for the next step. It already looked ten times better than it did just a few hours earlier.
Wrapping Up and What’s Next
While we got most of the hard work done in one day, there are a few follow-up steps. We’ll come back next week to lightly sand the areas that still have bits of stain left or that need smoothing out. After that, the deck will be ready for a fresh coat of oil-based stain for long-lasting protection and great aesthetics.
